Ephesians 6 Through the Eyes of The Maker

Life can feel like a tangled skein sometimes, can’t it? One moment everything seems to be stitching together beautifully, and the next, a knot appears out of nowhere. A thread snaps. A pattern goes off count. And suddenly the whole project feels overwhelming.

It’s easy to think the problem is the yarn, the pattern, or even our own hands. But Scripture reminds us that the real tension in our lives often comes from something deeper — something unseen.

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood…” Ephesians 6:12 (NIV)

Paul is reminding us that the snags and tangles we face aren’t really about the people around us or the circumstances in front of us. There is a spiritual battle woven into the fabric of our lives — threads we don’t always see, but definitely feel.

And just like any fiber artist prepares before beginning a project, God invites us to prepare our hearts and spirits for the work ahead.

🧶 Putting On the Armor of God — Like Preparing Your Tools

Before we pick up our needles or hook, we gather what we need: the right yarn, the right tools, the right pattern, the right mindset.

God’s armor works the same way.

“Stand firm then, with the belt of truth… the breastplate of righteousness… the gospel of peace… the shield of faith… the helmet of salvation… and the sword of the Spirit.” Ephesians 6:14–17 (NIV)

Each piece is like a tool in the Maker’s basket:

    • The Belt of Truth — the measuring tape that keeps everything aligned
    • The Breastplate of Righteousness — the protective layer guarding the heart of the project
    • The Shoes of Peace — the steady rhythm that keeps your stitches even
    • The Shield of Faith — the project bag that protects your work from snags and spills
    • The Helmet of Salvation — the pattern that reminds you of the bigger picture
    • The Sword of the Spirit (God’s Word) — the sharp scissors that cut away lies, knots, and anything that doesn’t belong

God doesn’t send you into life’s battles empty‑handed.

He equips you like a loving Designer who knows exactly what you’ll need for the journey.

🧵 God Is Weaving Victory Into Your Story

    And here’s the beautiful part:

The victory is already woven in.

“But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 15:57 (NIV)

You’re not trying to earn victory stitch by stitch.

You’re working from a pattern Jesus already completed.

    Even when the thread tangles…

Even when the colors don’t seem to match…

Even when you can’t see how this row will connect to the next…

    God is still weaving.

    Still shaping.

Still redeeming every knot and every unraveling moment.

    🪡 Take Heart, Dear Friend

So the next time you feel the tension of the battle — the tug, the pull, the knot forming — remember Ephesians 6:12.

    You are not fighting alone.

You are held by the Master Craftsman.

You are equipped with His armor.

You are part of a pattern more beautiful than you can imagine.

    Take heart, dear friend.

    You are loved.

    You are valued.

And in Christ, you are already victorious.

  • My Grandparents

Didnâ’t get any crochet or knitting done today. I had another commitment.

You see, today I went to the little town of Louisburg Kansas to visit my grandparents. We shared cake and celebrated. Why?  It is their 81st anniversary. No, that is not a typo, I said 81 years.

In 1929 Vern Isenhower, 17  and Verbal Peterson, 16 walked into the local county courthouse in Salem Arkansas and left a short time later as man and wife. Thus their adventure began.

They have many stories to tell of their lifetime together and the struggles they have encountered. No matter the battle, however, they held tight to each other and faced it together.

Today they live in their own home where my grandfather continues to have his daily oatmeal for breakfast and his white beans for dinner, along with a glass of milk.  They watch the Kansas City Royals on television and root for the team no matter their win loss record.

Their family has expanded to include great-great-grandchildren. I am blessed to have the opportunity to take my grandchildren to visit my grandparents. How many people have that honor!

They may not be as spry as they were years ago, but grandpa still has his garden and sells his vegetables at the local farmers market. Christmas Eve celebration still includes 5 generation gathering in their home.Only recently has grandpa allowed someone else to make the turkey.

Watch them together and you will notice they still hold hands.

Happy Anniversary grandpa and grandma. Thank you for the lessons you have taught us of love and commitment.

  • Seeking Wisdom

I have always thought that wisdom referred to a wealth of knowledge, that a wise man meant a smart man.

Recent study has opened my eyes to understanding that wisdom and knowledge are two separate things.  Look at these verses as examples:

Solomon is speaking to God in 2 Chronicles 1:10, Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people. and God replied in verse 12 wisdom and knowledge will be given to you.

Ecclesiastes 2:26  To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness.

So then, I asked, what is wisdom?

Psalm 111:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom

Job asks in 28:12 and 20 Where can wisdom be found? Where does understanding dwell? He considers then the worth of such and that it cannot be found in the land of the living (verse 13).  It can’t be bought, it is of such high value, it cannot be measured. He concludes in verse 29 The fear of the Lord-that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding.

These verses intrigued me. If they are one in the same, why are they listed separately by Solomon and by God? Then David and Job point out wisdom is the fear of the Lord.

I checked out the definition of knowledge at dictionary dot com and read acquaintance with facts, truths, or principles, as from study or investigation, then I looked up wisdom and read knowledge of what is true or right coupled with just judgment as to action.

Proverbs 2:10 helps differentiate the two.For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. Again, two different values.

Knowledge is information obtained by study, wisdom is knowing what is right and just. Right and just, that describes God!! Isaiah 45:21 There is no God apart from me, a righteous God and a Savior. With God’s wisdom He who does what is right is righteous, just as he (God) is righteous.” 1 John 3:7.

Proverbs is a book filled with wisdom, why we should embrace wisdom, and warnings against rejecting it. The book of Proverbs is 31 chapters. Why not spend the 31 days of January reading one chapter a day and finding for yourself God’s wisdom. Allow it to “enter your heart” as you begin this new year.

I challenge you to seek to fill your heart with wisdom and grow in the knowledge and understanding of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

  • Weave In Ends

I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:11 NIV

Every knit and crochet pattern includes the direction  “weave in ends”.

No project is complete without getting the stitches off the hook or needle and then weaving in the ends. You cannot work a project without having loose ends.

It is important that the ends are finished off in a manner that secures them and hides them in the work. If the ends come loose they may unravel the project. You’ve seen those cartoons where the woman is sitting in a rocking chair, knitting away, when her husband, child, or pet unknowingly snags the yarn and takes off running. ripping apart the work in progress row after row after row.

God’s word must be securely woven into our hearts so that our lives will not become unraveled.

I am God’s workmanship, his masterpiece, according to Ephesians 2:10.God is putting the finishing touches on the work he has begun (see Romans 13:12)

Do you have Scripture memorized and readily able to quote when needed?  I must confess, I have fallen behind in memorization with the technology that offers up the Bible on my phone or PC with just a few clicks. If I don’t recall the verse, I just type a few words in the search box and viola the words are right in front of me.

I am starting to see that as a bad habit, like leaving yarn ends hanging out. The words are not woven securely into my heart.

Though an army may encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.  Psalm 27:3  That confidence and peace that comes from God’s Word must first be there in order to be effective.

God’s Word, not just His general idea needs to be woven into my heart, securing the work in process that I am.

Now, I am challenging myself to memorize a verse for every yarn end I weave in.  How about you? Is God’s Word woven deep in your heart, holding you securely through each day?
