  • God is My Partner

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the LORD, not for human masters   – Col 3:23

This verse has always reminded me to look at everything I do as if I were am employee of God, working for Him.

It didn’t matter what I was doing, typing a report for my boss, washing the dishes, or even folding the laundry.  My goal was to do my best for God.

Recently I found another story and verse that had me look at these daily chores slightly different.

In Matthew 3, Jesus is approaching John the Baptist and asking to be baptized. John says it should be the other around.  Notice Jesus’ response in verse 15. “It should be done, for we must carry out all that God requires.”

Did you see it?  “for we”, WE “must carry out all that God requires.”

We aren’t just working FOR God….we are working WITH God.

You are not alone (Matt 28:20) “I am with you always”.

I love Isaiah 41:10 “I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will hold you with with my righteous right hand.”

We are not given an assignment and sent on our way.  We are in this with Jesus, doing God’s will – together.

  • Through My Headset–Kingdom Woman

I recently started trying to do some light workouts. To encourage me I turn on my audiobooks. During last month I  struggled through these workouts to the sound of Tony Evans and his daughter, Chrystal Evans Hurst, reading “Kingdom Woman”.

I enjoyed this book very much. Each chapter was a story and application to any woman’s life. This part is read by Tony Evans. This is followed by a personal story by his daughter. She becomes very open and real during “Chrystal’s Chronicles”.

It is difficult being a woman, and in today’s world the demands on her are enormous. Does God care she is exhausted from getting the kids up, fed and off to school or daycare, then off to work where she is completing her job responsibilities as well as planning kids transportation to evening activities, dinner arrangements, and then when home also help with homework and cleaning up the kitchen? Yes, he does.

If you are a woman, no matter what stage of life, I recommend this uplifting and encouraging book. Read or listen, you will be blessed.

“You are much more valuable than you may even realize. You are a child of the King; you are uniquely called and positioned to live devoted to God as one of His primary agents for advancing His purposes on earth. That is a high calling, and He will enable you to live it well. Never forget your value. Never settle for less than who you truly are.” —Kingdom Woman

  • Through My Headset – Precious Memories

Today I am listening to music.  I was busy pulling out piles I created in an effort to declutter and I came across a cassette album I cherish – Precious Moments by Steve and Annie Chapman.

I received this one day many years ago when in a very difficult time in my life.  I played this over and over. I cried every time.

In all my declutter piles today would you believe I have NO CASSETTE PLAYER!!  I can’t believe it either.

So…….. remembering how much I was blessed by the songs of Steve and Annie Chapman, I went to amazon and ordered the MP3 album.  It is now playing on a loop.  It touches my heart as much today as it did all those years ago.

If you would like to be blessed by it, here is a link to album. Keep the kleenex near by. You may have to wipe away a few tears to see your stitches 🙂

  • Through My Headset – Undone

Not all my books are audio. I have just completed a preview of a soon-to-be-released book from Michele Cushatt titled “UNDONE”. The book looks at her life and is subtitled “A story of making peace with an unexpected life”.

So many unexpected things happen in our lives. A phone call from a doctor, loss of a job, busted water pipes, a sick child.

In scripture we are promised “life abundant” not “a bed of roses” (however, even a rose garden is filled with thorns)

undoneMichele takes you through many of her unexpected happenings with family, work, cancer, and just life in general.

I was able to relate to much of her story. Even if I did not experience an event exactly as she did, I could equate her emotions to happenings in my own life.

When I started reading, I picked up some post-it note tags and marked places I related to or wanted to share. The book is filled with neon pink stickers. Way to many to share; but enough to remind me I am not alone.

Anyone who has experienced life, will be able to relate to her story. She reacts to life’s events much as I would, much as I believe many of you would. Her journey to finding how to deal with these events with God’s peace in encouraging. Accepting His peace doesn’t usually come with a snap of the finger as we would hope; it comes in time, in learning to trust, in accepting, in being made undone.

I highly recommend this book. You can find details on her website: http://undonebook.com/

P.S.  I received a preview copy of this book for promotion and review purposes. No compensation was made and these words are my own opinion.

  • Pride vs People Pleasing

I read an article recently (I can’t find it again so I can’t link it. When I do find it again I will edit this post).  Anyway…..

The article called ‘people pleasing’ a form of ‘pride’.

This caught me off guard. I never thought myself prideful. To me being prideful meant creating a ‘look at me’ attitude.  But people pleasing? That is definitely me. I have always tried to make everyone happy, to the expense of my own happiness.

Now I have to consider one is the same as the other. It got me thinking.

1 Thessalonians 4:1 instructs us to live to ‘please God’.  Galatians 1:10 asks “am I trying to please God, or man?”  I am now asking myself this very question.

I think it is time to re-evaluate my thinking. What are your thoughts? Is pleasing others a prideful thing?

  • Daily Contact

I recently read a post by author and speaker, Kay Arthur of Precept Ministries that reads:

What difference does it make if you’re not in the Word of God on a daily basis? It makes a critical difference. It’s the difference between a Hi-how-are-You?-By the-way-I’ve-been-meaning-to-tell-You relationship with God and a deep intimacy with your heavenly Father. Check out Psalm 119:2, “How blessed are those who observe His testimonies, Who seek Him with all their heart.”
I spoke with a friend on the phone today, we discussed how difficult it is to talk and be mindful of one another when we don’t talk for a long period of time.
I can’t imagine a day going by without speaking to my husband, our relationship is very special and constant contact with each other solidifies our commitment.
Looking at how daily contact is so important makes me ashamed that I am so far behind in sending out the newsletter and even posting on the blogs.
I had surgery on my back in July of 2010 and unfortunately I received no relief from the pain so I had a second surgery in March of this year. I neglected my knitting and crochet, I neglected contacting my friends, I neglected my prayer life and I neglected contact with all of you.
While still in pain, I am taking charge to seek reconnection with all.
I have pulled out the yarn, needles and hooks; I have started writing or calling friends, and I am writing to you now. Notice the verse in Psalm 119:2 says “those who seek him”.  Those words imply action. I must seek Him. God is always there, reaching out to me, but He will not force Himself on my life. I must in turn reach to Him.
I must also seek contact with you. So I am starting over and will be blogging again.  I have a number of posts started waiting for me to finish.
So grab your hooks, your needles, your yarn and your Bibles. Let’s get back together.
  • But, God…..

Two words keep coming  to my mind lately during my prayer time that I pray back “But, God”.

Things are distracting me from studying, But, God intervenes and opens a time.

Health issues have taken its toll on me.  But, God sees to it His Word is proclaimed.

Little details draw my attention from the big picture. But, God steps up and says ‘lift up your eyes, look away from the difficulty and look at me.”

No matter what is happening ‘but, God” will have His way.  Many times in scripture a story is told of difficulties.  These are often followed by 2 little words; But, God.

I pray that no matter what steps in your way as you struggle with whatever is facing you today, look away from it, lift your eyes and say “but, God” has it under control.

  • Quitting Time

if you put away the sin that is in your hand and allow no evil to dwell in your tent, then you will lift up your face without shame; you will stand firm and without fear. Job 11:14-15

I have recently heard a new term: Knit to Quit.  (before you crocheters hit the close button, the term as I heard it is ‘knit to quit’ but ‘crochet to quit’ is just as effective)

I first heard the term from my mother who had just read the book Summer on Blossom Street by Debbie Macomber.

I quickly did a google search and found several references to the phrase ‘Knit to Quit’ including a website by that name.

I learned to knit and to crochet as a child, but as I got older and into business and technology  I set the yarn aside.  I picked it back up when I started suffering chronic back pain.  I knit to change my focus, to help me quit thinking about the pain.  I have heard others say that as long as their hands are busy with yarn they don’t eat mindlessly. Many people have found benefits aside from yarn stashing and handmade clothing.

I am currently reading ‘Summer on Blossom Street’ and the ‘Knit to Quit’ class is attended by people wanting to quit something: smoking, a bad relationship, eating.

Some who have participated in my Knit and Crochet Bible Study say they use it to quit being busy. Knitting makes them sit and even relax.  I have a hard time just sitting  I have to have something in my hands, so by knitting and crochet I am relaxing, easing some of the pain, changing my focus, and being productive!

Some time ago there was a Canadian sitcom on one of my cable channels, Corner Gas.  It took place in a small town with a gas station and diner on the corner. In most episodes Emma would be knitting something. One day she commented to her son, Brent, that he drank too much coffee. He said he would quit coffee if she would quit knitting. I’lll spoil it for you and tell you at the end, neither one quit.

What challenge could be made to you to get you to quit knitting or crochet?

God wants us to quit something. He wants us to quit sinning. God also knows this is not something we can do alone. God loves us so much He offered up His own Son as a sacrifice to help us. We will never be sinless, no matter how hard we try, because we are human. We can seek forgiveness and follow His commands.

Have you ever found yourself driving the wrong direction and needed to make a U-Turn to get back on the right road. That is what we do when we repent, seeking forgiveness. It means to turn away from the sin, not back to it. So we must quit that sin.

Using our knit/crochet terms, that u-turn is like frogging a project. (Frog, think rip-it, rip-it, rip-it)   And just like frogging a project you have worked on for so long feels painful as you see each stitch ripped away as if it never existed, so we must frog our lives, rip out those problem parts of our lives and seek forgiveness.

Job 11:13-19   “Yet if you devote your heart to him and stretch out your hands to him,  if you put away the sin that is in your hand and allow no evil to dwell in your tent, then you will lift up your face without shame; you will stand firm and without fear. You will surely forget your trouble, recalling it only as waters gone by.  Life will be brighter than noonday,  and darkness will become like morning. You will be secure, because there is hope; you will look about you and take your rest in safety. You will lie down, with no one to make you afraid,  and many will court your favor.  Our sins are frogged and gone. Once forgiven, God forgets. He doesn’t keep a tally of our wrongs. He keeps our names in the book of life. He who overcomes will, like then, be dressed in white. I will never blot out his name from the book of life, but will acknowledge his name before my Father and his angels. Rev 3:5NIV

Why do you knit/crochet? What would you quit by knitting/crochet?

P.S.  I just thought of this as I ended the piece so I will add it here. This discussion has been on quitting something. There is something I’ like to encourage you to start. Pray. Pray while you are knitting. Pray silently, pray out loud; pray for the recipient of your project, pray for your needs. If you are not in a group setting, remember Christ is beside you and you have your own group setting. Now tell him, what do you want to quit; what do you need; what are you grateful for.

You can find  Summer on Blossom Streetâ at Amazon or other bookstores.

  • Keep In Touch

Today I opened my daily K-Love Word of the Day which reminded me that is not what God intended.

And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.  Heb 10:25

When God created man, he then created woman because it was not good for man to be alone. Just as God desires a relationship with us, He desires for us to have relationships, gathering together to encourage, one another.

If you know someone alone or ill, stop by and talk with them. Conversation does NOT need to revolve around medical issues, talk about life, family, tell jokes, laugh.

I have a friend that receives calls from me occasionally where I say to her ‘talk to me about anything’. She doesn’t ask about my pain level or what is wrong.  She tells me about her dogs latest antics, how her golf game went, how she did in her computer solitaire game and what projects she is ignoring by doing these things.  In the end she has me laughing and forgetting, even if for just a short time, the physical pain. She is a treasure in my life.

Perhaps I need to add a little note here: don’t be the one always receiving the encouragement. You will find great strengths in yourself when you also in return offer encouragement to others.

Encouragement comes in many forms, and just taking the time to spend time with someone in need, is often the best encouragement of all.

  • Seeking Wisdom

I have always thought that wisdom referred to a wealth of knowledge, that a wise man meant a smart man.

Recent study has opened my eyes to understanding that wisdom and knowledge are two separate things.  Look at these verses as examples:

Solomon is speaking to God in 2 Chronicles 1:10, Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people. and God replied in verse 12 wisdom and knowledge will be given to you.

Ecclesiastes 2:26  To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness.

So then, I asked, what is wisdom?

Psalm 111:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom

Job asks in 28:12 and 20 Where can wisdom be found? Where does understanding dwell? He considers then the worth of such and that it cannot be found in the land of the living (verse 13).  It can’t be bought, it is of such high value, it cannot be measured. He concludes in verse 29 The fear of the Lord-that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding.

These verses intrigued me. If they are one in the same, why are they listed separately by Solomon and by God? Then David and Job point out wisdom is the fear of the Lord.

I checked out the definition of knowledge at dictionary dot com and read acquaintance with facts, truths, or principles, as from study or investigation, then I looked up wisdom and read knowledge of what is true or right coupled with just judgment as to action.

Proverbs 2:10 helps differentiate the two.For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. Again, two different values.

Knowledge is information obtained by study, wisdom is knowing what is right and just. Right and just, that describes God!! Isaiah 45:21 There is no God apart from me, a righteous God and a Savior. With God’s wisdom He who does what is right is righteous, just as he (God) is righteous.” 1 John 3:7.

Proverbs is a book filled with wisdom, why we should embrace wisdom, and warnings against rejecting it. The book of Proverbs is 31 chapters. Why not spend the 31 days of January reading one chapter a day and finding for yourself God’s wisdom. Allow it to “enter your heart” as you begin this new year.

I challenge you to seek to fill your heart with wisdom and grow in the knowledge and understanding of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
