  • Newbies

I love to watch someone just learning to knit or crochet; the excitement when they realize ‘hey, I can do this’.  They get a big smile, quite contagious when you are around them, and they want to show off their work.

It’s like that with new Christians too.  If they have truly accepted the relationship with Christ they exude excitement and want to tell everyone they meet about Jesus.

I have recently met a woman who has known ‘of God’ much of her life, but just started a relationship with Christ as Lord of her life. This woman will tell anyone and everyone she meets about Jesus. She’ll stop what she is doing and pray for any concern you share with her. I know her love and prayers are real because of the blessings I have seen God bless her with.

Sometimes after we have been Christians for a while we lose that excitement. As we sometimes do with those we love, we take for granted what we have.

I am thankful that Christ doesn’t lose His excitement for me or take my love for granted. Despite my many failures He is always there, ready to take my hand when I extend it back to Him. He loves me so much He died that I may have an eternal life with Him.

This week, watch a new knitter or crocheter at work and remember your early days in the skill (after the initial “I am never going to get this” feeling had passed).  Stand back and watch a new Christian seek more knowledge of Christ.

What can you do to bring back some of the same excitement into your life?

  • I am being “Felted”

One of my favorite lessons in the first Knit and Crochet Bible Study books is “Felted in Jesus“.  Last night I had the honor of leading the devotional in our small group and I handed everyone a crocheted wool square to felt while I presented the lesson.

Everyone enjoyed discussing how they are being felted in their lives. I am in the felting process too.

Last week, while on the way to a prayer session at a local nursing home I had an accident. This is the first time I have ever caused an accident. No one was hurt seriously. I have lots of bruising on my body and especially my pride. I feel guilty and depressed; feelings definitely NOT from the Lord.

On top of this, I have been overwhelmed by a situation of conflict with another person.

During the presentation I heard God telling me to listen to my own words.

God doesn’t give you the people you want, He gives you the people to NEED. To help you, to hurt you, to leave you, to love you and to make you into the person you were meant to be.

Wool felts from the friction created by rubbing the fibers together. Once they are bonded the material will hold tight. You can cut a shape out of the fabric created and it will not unravel or tear.

In the same manner, God can mold and cut out the person he is creating with the friction rubbing against me and felting me into Him.

Are you being felted? Gather some wool, knit or crochet a square. Get it wet with water and a drop of dish soap. Now squeeze it, rub it together, squish it until it becomes a tightly woven material. Cut out a shape that you can place on a key ring or chain. Hang it somewhere you will see it daily. And be reminded that you felted into God’s love.

SUGGESTION – if you are using this project with a group, after everyone has cut out their desired shape, go around the room asking the meaning of the shape they chose.

Who can steal you away from Him? Read Romans 8:35-39 to find out.

(spoiler alert: not death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing)

You can purchase 1 or both studies on Amazon.

  • Errata

Dictionary dot com defines ‘errata’ as “a list of errors and their corrections inserted, usually on a separate page or slip of paper, in a book or other publication”

We live in a wonderful time technologically.  It used to be we would buy a magazine with knitting or crochet patterns. Then while working the pattern we would reach a section that just would not work right. We would have to buy the next month’s issue and look for the page titled “Errata” and look for pattern corrections so we could complete the project.

Today’s technology offers so many patterns to be purchased in PDF format. Then when an error is found, buyers are sent notice of corrections and new files to download with corrections and updates. It is easy to contact designers with the internet and email.

    With all this technology, however, there is one thing that has not changed;

    Errors are made.

There is one book that has no errors – The Bible. God’s Word, like Christ himself is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8).

The God who created the heavens and the earth is the same who dried up the sea, making a path of escape through the depths so that your people could cross over. (Isaiah 51:10)

Things change every day in our lives.Things need to be fixed in our lives every day. (I just uploaded a web page wrong and messed up my website, hopefully fixed so you can see this post).

I am thankful for one thing. GOD NEVER CHANGES. HE IS IN CONTROL. I don’t want to follow a god that can be manipulated. I want a God that is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow, that is omnipresent, omniscient, faithful and just.

Rev 22:13  I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.

  • Take Off the Grave Clothes

The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.” John 11:44

The story of Jesus calling Lazarus from the tomb after laying dead in it 4 days is a story often told. As excellent a bible story as it is, I bet you are wondering what this has to do with knitting/crochet.

My pastor did an excellent sermon this week using the story and pointed out something I had not seen in previous readings.  At the end of the verse (John 11:44) Jesus told the family and friends with him to “take off the grave clothes.”.  He was telling them to take these off Lazarus. The point of this? We need others in our lives.

One of the benefits of group bible studies is sharing with each other. We can talk about daily happenings and encourage one another.  You can study by yourself, but God did not create us to take life on alone. He wants to be part of our lives and he wants us to spend time with others of faith.

The Knit and Crochet Bible Study is created to be used in a group setting. Often these groups are multi-generational. This is an excellent opportunity to learn from each other, young and old. The short story I tell in each lesson is created to be a conversation starter. Read each piece, then discuss amongst yourselves how the verse affected you; how you relate to my story; tell your own story.

We are in the process of making single copy studies available via Kindle and Nook. This is not to take you away from the group setting, but to allow you to each have your own copy instead of the church version where paper copies must be made for everyone.

Many people have been hurt at one time or another by someone in the church. They have chosen this as a reason to stay away. God doesn’t want us to stay away. He wants us to help each other grow. As in all gardens there are weeds that need to be plucked, but the flowers still need to stand out and grow together, making a beautiful picture.

Join the group, take off the death clothes, and let’s grow together.

  • Welcome 2013–A New Word to Live By

2012 has bid farewell, and 2013 begins anew.

Last year was the first time I had worked on a WORD for the year. The word was Unfinished. A lot of things went unfinished, including my posting.

I have not been diagnosed with A.D.D. I know several who have been diagnosed and take medication for it. They look at me and question the possibility I may be a bit A.D.D. I tell them I am just a multitasker. Unfortunately my multitasking has led to more “unfinished” projects.

That is what last year’s word has shown me. I lose focus and leave too many tasks incomplete. Losing focus can come from physical pain, from crafting distractions, from life in general.

In Bible Study my multitasking led to rabbit trails where I would seek additional information, but many times the rabbit trails led me out of the forest into a whole new universe. And often times once distracted that far it is hard to return to the study at hand.

So, this year’s word is FOCUS. I can continue to multitask but I need to reach completion.

I learned a lot about myself looking at last year’s word.  I work very well with deadlines. I have been fortunate to begin pattern testing for some designers through facebook. I watched myself set aside current projects to work on their assignment to completion.  I need to make assignments to keep me focused.

So, my assignment for this week.

    Make lists:

    • Goals for 2013
    • Current unfinished items
    • Planned projects

Then with list in hand, make deadlines and move forward. Become more focused on what I am doing and, if necessary, make an assignment of each project if that is what I will respond to.

Most importantly is I need to forgive myself.  When I leave something unfinished I often punish myself. This must stop. I need to stop, pray, forgive, move on. It’s easy to write down.  It seems obvious to me now. But living it out is often difficult. With God’s help, I know I can do it.

I think 2013 will be a very interesting year.

    Welcome 2013. Let’s get FOCUSED.

P.S. Do you have a problem focusing or completing projects? How do you deal with it? What tricks it techniques have worked for you? Comment here. We can focus together.

  • Slow Down, You Move Too Fast

Isaiah 30:15 convicts me, ” This is what the Sovereign LORD, the Holy One of Israel, say: In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it.”

Pain has had me in its grips for the past few days. I cannot concentrate so I am watching some old TV Land Andy Griffith shows. Today’s episode reminded me of this verse.

A traveling pastor comes thru town and speaks on slowing down and taking it easy. “Why are we always in a hurry?” he asks.

We are living in a day of technology that was supposed to offer us more free time, and instead, it seems to keep us busier than ever. We are never without a phone that dings every few seconds to tell us of incoming emails and Facebook posts.  We sit at tables in restaurants with family, everyone having their own conversation on their phones, not with each other.

We can’t even watch television without the interruption it offers, announcing incoming phone calls.

Being a multitasker myself (or perhaps it is A.D.D. or Type A personality or just I can’t focus on one thing) I find that I don’t do just one thing. If I have a knit or crochet project in my hands, I have headphones on listening to a book, or the television entertaining me. Even when I sleep my mind replays the events of the day and the list of items that remained undone that day.

I find my biggest problem in doing one thing is during Bible Study time. If I use my laptop to study I find it easy to get distracted by notifications of messages and the temptation to see what is going on with family and friends on Facebook. When I use my printed Bibles I look around and feel I am neglecting duties around the house.

It takes determination to set these things aside and focus totally on the Lord. Just like choosing to follow Him and choosing to knit or crochet, I must choose to rest. Perhaps if I focus on these verses I can bring my active mind into one accord with Him.

Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee. Psalm 116:7.

Matthew 11:28: Come to me and I will give you rest.

Be at rest once more, O my soul, for the LORD has been good to you.“ Psalm 116:7

“There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God”   (Hebrews 4:9).

“Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. (Matt. 11:28 NLT).

Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray my soul to rest in thee. Give me comfort, give me peace, in your arms Lords, I will sleep.

What do you do to clear your mind and find rest?

  • God–the first creative artist

My favorite Bible stories are the ones where God shows off His creative side.  I swell up a little with pride because I think I got my creativity from my Father.

Scripture shows God’s creativity in so many ways. First, the most well-known, is in Genesis where we read about God creating the earth and its inhabitants in 7 days.  For the sun, moon, seas, and mountains He spoke; but when it came to creating man and woman, God stepped on the earth and with His own hands, created them. He blew His breath into their nostrils. We were hands on created.

Check out Exodis28. God is giving  Moses a pattern for making holy garments for Aaron. Read the detail God gives for this outfit and its construction. He even includes underwear. Underwear!! God is definitely into the details.

In Exodus 25 God gives instructions on making the ark a sanctuary in which He would dwell among them.

These are just a few examples of God’s creativity. How many more can you find? Leave a comment with your favorite passage.

  • The Axhead Floats

God continues stitching away on His work in progress that is me. Each day he tinks a bit (knit back to remove one stitch at a time) and other days he frogs big chunks of work (rip-it, rip-it, rip-it).

I want to share with you a lesson I wrote up and used in one of Knit and Crochet Bible Studies. This one is not in either of the published

You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you posses eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me. John 5:39

It is recommended that you read through an entire pattern before you begin your first stitch. In my class as we discuss how to read a pattern I ask the student to read the pattern out loud one row of instruction at a time and then to translate what that instruction means. This shows me she understands the direction given and helps her to visualize what to expect from her pattern.

This same principle works very well with Scripture. During a recent Bible Study there was a discussion about listening to audio versions of the Bible. Many of the ladies commented they absorb the message more when they hear the word than when they read it to themselves. Reading out loud even proves more comprehension that reading silently.

Whether it is a pattern or scripture, “hearing” and then “restating in your own words” is an effective learning tool. Let’s apply that strategy to a passage in 2 Kings 6:1-7.

The company of the prophets said to Elisha, “Look, the place where we meet with you is too small for you. Let us go to the Jordan, where each of us can get a pole; and let us build a place there for us to live.”

    And he said, “Go.”

Then one of them said, “Won’t you please come with your servants?”

“I will”, Elisha replied. And he went with them.

They went to the Jordan and began to cut down trees. As one of them was cutting down a tree, the iron axhead fell into the water. “Oh, my lord,” he cried out, ‘it was borrowed.”

The man of God asked, “Where did it fall?” When he showed him the place, Elisha cut a stick and threw it there and made the iron float. “Lift it out,” he said. Then the man reached out his hand and took it.

When you read a pattern for a complex article, perhaps a cardigan, or one with an elaborate design in it, you wrinkle your nose at parts of it and wonder ‘what is that and why is it in here’. That is what I thought when I read this passage. Then I read it out loud and restated it in my own words. I am going to restate this ‘pattern’ to you.

The part of the prophet cutting trees to build a place to sleep is played by you. You are knitting a blanket. You are working hard to provide for yourself. In Genesis 3 we learn of the curse given to man through the fall of Adam and Eve. Genesis 3:19 reads: By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food.

You are working hard with borrowed knitting needles when you are startled. You drop one of the needles fall into the sewer. This now creates a debt you cannot pay. You don’t have the financial ability to purchase one yourself, that is why you borrowed in the first place. And now you not only cannot complete your task of the blanket which was to provide you with funds, you owe the person your borrowed from the cost of the needles which you cannot afford!

In your sinful nature you fall short of the glory of God. Satan lays claim to you because you cannot pay the debt required by God. Along comes Jesus Christ with the cross (Elisha and the stick in the story). Jesus goes to the cross for you and as the axhead floats to the top (you dive into His Word).

Now let’s look very closely at verse 7 of our story. “Lift it out, he said. Then the man reached out his hand and took it. God has provided a way to reach him, Jesus Christ. You reach out and accept His gift of Salvation and your debt is paid. Your soul (the axhead) is not lost. It has been retrieved! Thanks be to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord! Romans 7:25 Jesus went to the cross, he took the beating, the humiliation, the crucifixion. He hurt so bad he sweat blood according to Luke 22:44.

Your debt is paid! The axhead is within your reach. But you must “reach out and take it”. I have notebooks and magazines and digital files full of many patterns. Owning the patterns does not provide a finished project. I must actively follow the pattern with the necessary tools and work to make the item.

If you do not reach out and accept the Salvation of God offered through Jesus Christ, you have turned away from God. Salvation sits there, like the pattern for the most beautiful shawl you have ever imagined.

Let’s retell the story now using our new actors. You live your life trying to be good. You are a good person, you are kind. You attend church regularly, serve at the local food pantry. You knit or crochet hats, gloves, mittens and blankets for the homeless shelter. You give financially to your home church and several missionaries as well.

One day you approach the gates of heaven but you cannot get in, the gate is locked and you do not have the key. No amount of good works, and best intentions will get you into heaven. I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6 Jesus comes alongside you and says he has the key. He holds the it out toward you.

Do you turn and walk away? Or do you reach out and take the key that will allow you access to God’s glory?

  • Unfinished Life–Week 7 and 8

I was watching a Veggie Tales episode Sumo of the Opera and was excited to see Hebrews 10:36 as the correlating verse. Persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. The story line was about a cucumber that never finished anything. He needed to learn to persevere and learn to complete his tasks. Sound familiar? Like my posts so far this year? I am printing this out as a constant reminder to me.

Remember I found a baby hat kit on sale? Well, I finished it. I don’t like it, but I finished it. You knit or crochet the top portion and attach it to the premade band. Add a pom pom to top and you are finished. I have pulled out a pattern for some boots that I am going to crochet in the same color. I am hoping this will look better as a set than alone. Here is the finished product. Perhaps if I placed it on a baby I would feel differently.

Amazon has the kit available. (click here)

While moving things around in my craft room organization attempt I found this doll I made back in 1986.

The original Cabbage Patch doll was just out and I had to search all over the state to find a doll for each of my girls (we were also looking for pound puppies that year too).

I loved the dolls, thought they were so cute, but could not justify in my mind purchasing one for myself. But, I could justify making one!

I found this pattern (which is also available today on Amazon)

I made this one for me.  Though the term Cabbage Patch is not used, it definitely has the same appearance as those dolls.

A special memory remains with me, the house was rather quiet and I went looking for the girls. I found my youngest sitting on my bed cuddling this doll. The baby was crying mom and I was taking care of her.

The doll looked a bit ragged today, but she is 25 years old and has been in and out of craft storage containers all these years. Red Heart yarn sure does hold up!

Looking at the doll and realizing she sure could use a good cleaning, I found this eHow instruction on cleaning vinyl dolls.

I might have to make another one. I wonder if the doll heads are still available.

Several years ago I crocheted a dinosaur applique and sewed it on a t-shirt for my grandson.  He has outgrown it so I have removed it from the old tshirt and am applying it to a new one so he can continue to wear it.

The pattern was featured in the March/April 2004 Crochet Today magazine.

I teach knitting and crochet at my local Michaels store. Next Saturday all Michaels stores will be hosting an Instructor Meet and Greet. From 1-3pm instructors will be at the stores with displays about their classes. I am preparing some material for my table and trying to finish up another demo project – a baby kimono. Any classes you sign up for that day will be 25% off.  This is a great time to learn or enhance your crafting skills.

I am working on the next newsletter. If you are signed up, watch for it in the next few days. If you are not signed up and would like to, go to the website and click on Newsletter Signup in the top menu bar.

My website was down for a couple of days because the hosting company had some server problems. The site is back up now.  I apologize for the inconvenience this created. Hopefully all will function smoothly now.

    Until next week, persevere!!

  • A Love Letter from Jesus

I have a number of manufactured bears that I have made into a precious Valentine gift.  These are some of the softest, cuddliest bears I have ever hugged.

This bear is dressed with a red ribbon around the neck. Attached to one paw is a scroll with Scripture of love promises for Jesus’ beloved.

The picture shows a clipart of chocolates, but I will include a real mini box of chocolate.

The bear comes in 3 color styles. He/She is 15 inches head to paw and sits 10 inches high.

Valentines Day can be depressing sometimes. This would be a perfect gift for someone you may know.

If you live near me, we can meet up and no shipping charges would be incurred.

If you wish, you may order, but I can make no promise about the delivery date via the Postal Service. I will, however, have it at the post office within 24 hours of payment received. So if you hurry, there should not be a problem receiving it by the 14th.

The bear is $15 and if shipped, an additional $5. (More if you want express delivery)  I will accept cash from a local purchase. All others will be billed via PayPal.  No exceptions, sorry.

Please contact me with any questions prior to purchase.
